Request a Room


To qualify for a room at the Durham House:

  • A family must reside 50 miles or more away from the medical facility where treatment is being received.
  • The patient receiving medical treatment is 21 years or younger.
  • The medical treatment is occurring in a facility where caregivers are not able to stay bedside or the treatments are on an outpatient basis.
  • Be deemed appropriate for residing in a community environment, with all adults over 18 passing a background check screening.

First-Time Families:

  1. A referral must be completed by your child’s social worker or case manager.

    To reach your child’s social worker, call Duke Social Work Office at (919) 681-4722.

  2. Once the referral is received, our Family Care team will verify your qualifications and contact you with additional instructions.
  3. Families must call the Durham House at (919) 286-9305, after 12 pm on the day of requested check-in to confirm that a room is available. The Durham House does not take reservations and is unable to guarantee room availability ahead of time.

Return Families:

  1. You may self-request a room at the House by filling out the Returning Guests Request Form.
  2. Once the request is received, the House will verify your qualifications and contact you with additional instructions.
  3. You must call the House after 12pm on the day you would like to check-in to confirm space is available at the House.

    If a room is not available at the House, you will be offered a reduced rate (approx. $50 per night) at a local hotel.
